Can a fragrance-free toner solve all your skin problems?
Maybe not all of them, but this product can clean your skin, leaving it smooth and hydrated.
Why is it so important for the product to be fragrance-free?
Fragrances are chemicals which may be harmful to your health. This may happen in the short or long term, depending on your skin type and sensitivity.
Fragrance-free products are a great alternative. They do not contain these chemicals and may also lack other ones.
Going for a fragrance-free toner can be beneficial for your skin.
Benefits of using a fragrance-free toner
Do not contain artificial fragrances
Fragrances are the chemicals responsible for giving products their characteristic smell.
They are used in various items, from facial toners, moisturizers, shampoos, conditioners, to toilet cleaners and laundry detergents.
Do you know those wonderful scents these products have? Fragrances are behind them.
The problem with these chemicals is they are endocrine disruptors. They can mimic human hormones and send the body the wrong signals. They may also cause hormonal disbalances.
Fragrance-free products such as a fragrance-free face moisturizer can be a great alternative, especially it’s recommended to use a moisturizer after cleaning your skin.
Takes care of your skin
A fragrance-free toner removes makeup, oil, and leaves your skin surface smooth. It may reduce redness and inflammation.
It’s a great product you may want to include in your skin cleaning routine.
Here are a few benefits of using a fragrance-free toner:
- Can help you balance your pH levels
- Removes smoke or smog chemicals your skin gathers throughout the day
- Removes oil buildup and dead skin cells
- Helps you keep your skin hydrated
- Can be used to clean neck and chest as well
Chemicals found in conventional facial toners
Facial toners can be split into two main categories when speaking of their ingredients:
A fragrance-free toner is part of the chemical-free category, as well as a hair removal cream without chemicals.
Conventional facial toners can contain certain chemicals which may affect your skin.
I’ve briefly discussed a few aspects related to fragrances.
There’s more to know about them.
If you look on the ingredients list, you will find them listed as fragrances or perfume.
What you don’t know about them is that behind the word fragrances hide thousands of chemicals.
This does not mean that a single product uses thousands of chemicals. It means it’s really difficult to identify whether the product used 2-3 or tens of chemicals to create that specific fragrance.
This happens because companies are not obliged to disclose the chemicals they use, keeping it as a trade secret.
Facial toners use astringents to make your skin less oily.
Sometimes these astringents are alcohol-based. Toners which contain such ingredients can make your skin dry and may lead to dead skin buildup.
Acetone is another ingredient which can cause similar effects.
Alcohol-free facial toners are a better alternative.
Parabens are the preservatives that give products their long shelf lives.
The problem with them is they have been linked to different types of cancer.
Although there is no evidence they are a cause for this condition, there is a relationship between these two. Further research is needed to clearly identify the connection between them.
How to make your own fragrance-free toner
There are two big ways to have a toner without fragrances. You can purchase it or you make it yourself.
The ingredients you will need are:
- 4 tablespoons of rose water
- 2 tablespoons of witch hazel
- 1 teaspoon of apple vinegar
- 5 drops of rosehip oil
- 5 drops of tea tree essential oil
- 5 drops of an essential oil of your preference
Mix all the ingredients and them put them in a spray bottle.
When you want to use it, just spray it on your face, after you’ve removed your makeup using the cruelty-free makeup remover.
